mcarto
an opinionated mountain map library
Detailed maps of the mountains, built from open national elevation data and OpenStreetMap, with one carefully designed look. Published as static vector tiles: no map server, no API keys.

What makes it opinionated
- 10 m contours from 5 m national elevation models (ICGC, IGN España, IGN France), mosaicked across borders.
- Alpine terrain: rock, scree and boulder fields from official land cover fused with OpenStreetMap, where OSM is mapped by hand.
- Trails by difficulty: from roads and tracks to T1–T6 mountain paths and via ferratas,
read from OSM's
sac_scaleand visibility tags. - Hiking routes (GR, PR, SL) drawn beside the path, not over it.
- Relief: soft hillshade and a subtle elevation tint, precomputed and in the browser.
- One look: the style is part of the product, the same in every app that uses it.
Use it
mcarto is a MapLibre style over PMTiles. Load the style URL; tiles come straight from a CDN with HTTP range requests.
This is a pilot: the area grows cell by cell (about 29 × 29 km each) and the URL and layer names may still change. Outside the published cells the map shows OpenFreeMap with relief from Mapterhorn.
Data and licences
Vector tiles contain OpenStreetMap data and are published under the Open Database License. Elevation and land cover come from open official datasets, credited in each release.
Who is behind it
mcarto is made by Xavier Orduña. It is the map behind Alcim.
